Refractive surgery

See Clearly with Refractive Surgery at Urmil Eye Hospital, Vapi Do you struggle with blurry vision or have to wear glasses or contact lenses to see properly? Refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are common vision issues making daily tasks difficult. At Urmil Eye Hospital in Vapi, we offer advanced refractive surgery to correct refractive errors and reduce dependency on vision correction devices.

Understanding Refractive Errors Refractive errors occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. They include:

  • Nearsightedness – objects farther away appear blurry
  • Farsightedness – nearby objects appear blurry
  • Astigmatism – blurred vision at any distance due to an irregularly shaped cornea

Refractive errors are typically present from childhood and certain factors like genetics, eye injury, or aging can increase their progression. If left unaddressed, refractive errors can cause headaches, eyestrain, difficulty driving at night, impaired reading ability, and increased risk of other eye problems.

Refractive Surgery Options at Urmil Refractive surgery uses lasers to reshape the cornea and improve focusing ability. Urmil Eye Hospital offers advanced refractive surgical procedures, including:

LASIK – The cornea is reshaped by laser to focus light accurately onto the retina. This common outpatient procedure takes 10-15 minutes per eye.

PRK – The cornea’s surface is refined by laser after the outermost layer is gently removed. There is minimal discomfort.

Smile – A thin flap is created in the cornea through which targeted laser pulses are delivered to alter its curvature.

Our team of skilled ophthalmologists in Vapi evaluate your eye health and vision needs to determine if you are suited for refractive surgery. Based on advanced diagnostic tests, we’ll recommend the ideal procedure to correct your refractive errors.

Question Asked by Patient

Normal lens in our eye is clear. When this lens becomes cloudy making things blurred or causing difficulty in vision its known as Cataract.

Cataracts usually develop as a natural part of aging when proteins in the lens start to clump together, clouding the lens. So basically, Cataract is not a disease, it’s an age related process just like greying of your hair. But then nowadays you have seen people with young age having grey hair, similarly cataract can happen in early age if there is history of trauma to eye or head, use of over the counter medicines containing steroids, diabetes or other systemic risk factors.

Most common complains include blurry or cloudy vision, double vision, sensitivity to light, yellowish discolouration, frequent change in glasses, difficulty seeing at night and difficulty in driving.

While they can’t be prevented, you can reduce the risk by protecting your eyes from sunlight by wearing anti-glare glasses or photo chromatic glasses, avoid smoking, eat healthy diet and managing health conditions like diabetes.

Yes, surgery is the only effective treatment for cataract. Cataract cannot be prevented or reversed by any eye drops or glasses. During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

Cataract surgery is generally safe and highly successful. It is one of the most common and routine surgeries performed worldwide. It takes only 10-30 minutes and is usually painless.

No, once the cloudy lens is removed, it doesn’t come back. However, in some cases, a membrane may form behind the artificial lens in the bag that may become cloudy over time, but this can be easily treated with a laser.

While this was true some time ago when cataract surgery was performed using large incision (6-7mm), Nowadays, Cataract surgery is performed using micro incision Phacoemulsification (Laser) technique (1.8-2.8mm) giving advantage of quick post-operative recovery and better quality of vision.

Before any surgical procedure, you must discuss your health related issues like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and kidney related problems with your doctor because you may have to stop blood thinners for the surgery (If your doctor plans for Peribulbar anaesthesia). It is also of utmost importance that your sugar must be no more than 140mg/Dl fasting or 180 mg/dl post prandial. Hypertension and other systemic risk factors also needs to be controlled. You must wash your hair before surgery as the doctor may advice against washing your hair for some time after surgery. Some doctors like to start few eye drops before surgery and you must consult regarding the same with yours. It is wise to get treated for dryness or any surface pathologies of eye before surgery for most accurate results and better clarity of vision.

You must instil eye drops as advised by doctor and should never miss our follow up. Avoid wearing any make up, washing your eyes with water. Avoid bending forward or lifting heavy weights. Avoid sleeping on the side of surgery and rubbing your eyes. Last but not the least, Wear protective goggles all the time!

The need of glasses after cataract surgery depends on the corneal astigmatism before surgery and the type of lens you chose during cataract surgery. Some options include:

Monofocal: These lenses clear your distance vision and you may need glasses for near (like seeing mobiles and reading newspaper) and intermediate distance (like working on computer)

Multifocal: These lenses clear your distance and near vision and you may need glasses for intermediate distance (like working on computer).

Trifocal: These lenses clear your distance, near vision and intermediate vision reducing your dependency on glasses.

Extended depth of focus (EDOF): These lenses clear your distance and intermediate vision providing a continuous range of vision you may still need glasses for near work like (sewing thread in needle).

Toric: These are customized lenses to correct any astigmatism or cylindrical error. These can be monofocal, multifocal, trifocal or extended depth of focus.

To know more about what lens is better for you, you must consult your eye doctors because every lens has its own advantages and disadvantages.
